You can see much more detail by looking at the image of “Guernica” here or here, rather than on the photocopy I distributed in class. You can also try looking online for other copies of it–there are various sites that show it. If you find a better copy, please let us know so we can look at it, too!
For homework, do a bit of online research. Post a comment in response to this post in which you 1-describe what this source tells you about the painting, and 2-explain how you know you can trust this source.
My source tells me that Pablo Picasso created this painting in response to when Adolf Hilter had his air force bomb Guernica (Spain), for “target practice”
This is a good source of information because it is an online “Magazine of Art & Politics”
Thanks, Hayley, for being the first to post your response. Can you say some more? This response should be longer than two sentences. How does the source tell you that information? What does that information mean to you? Who lived in the town of Guernica? Why would it have been chosen for “target practice,” as you say? These are some questions you might consider, but you are not limited to them, nor do you need to answer these specifically. Please also include the link to the site so anyone who is interested can read more.
The Guernica painting by Picasso depicts the bombing of Guernica, Spain, by German and Italian warplanes at the behest of the Spanish Nationalist forces, on April 26, 1937, during the Spanish Civil War according to Wikipedia. This sophisticated painting shows the outcome of the war and the suffering individuals, particularly innocent civilians according to Wikipedia. Wikipedia thoroughly describes every single detail in the painting from the flower to the whole room. The Guernica painting shows the suffering people, animals, and buildings wrenched by violence and chaos also interpreted by Wiki. Wikipedia shows more than 50 different details about the painting and it all makes sense due to similar results in other websites, I won’t write all of them but I’ll choose the ones that were brought up in class. One detail that was brought up in class was the dead man underneath the horse; this dead man was fighting and as a result was dismembered, as you can see his dismembered arm holding a sword. Another detail that was brought up in class was the light bulb; in class students mentioned the light bulb was a star, a sun, and an eye, they were right because in this painting the light bulb blazes making it look like an evil eye overlooking the dead man. One of my peers in class mentioned that the woman underneath the bull that is grieving about the death of the child and she was correct because Wiki and other websites interpreted the same answer. Lastly, the bull’s tail forms an image of a flame with smoke rising from it. I trust Wikipedia because I visited other websites before I can go with this one and those websites interpreted the same answers for almost all details, so there fourth I trust the Wikipedia website.
P.S- I like the way one of my peers (I forgot his name) interpreted this painting to the barn story lol.
The picture was inspired by the “Spanish Civil War” which Picasso hidden secret Harlequin. He did not want to reveal, but a 20th century magician had revealed his secrets. In my sources, tells you where and how to reveal the hidden Harlequin. ex. if you turn the page 90 degrees to the left, The outline of the face and traditional hat and mask make him identifiable.
I can trust my source because it gave great detail about the painting and the background.
As we all know a work of art as complex as Guernica by Picasso can have various interpretations. Unfortunately, Picasso refused to explain the message under his cubist painting. According to my source ( http://web.org.uk/picasso/secret_guernica.html )what we do know is that Picasso was inspired by the violent German bombing over the town of Guernica in Spain on the afternoon of April 26, 1937. In his cubist painting Picasso painted various combinations of patches or harlequins with concealed messages to represent the death caused by the bombing. As mentioned in class, the image if rotated in different directions you may also find more hidden subliminal messages.
Although, as I mentioned before Picasso never explained his creation I highly trust my source. As I research the bombing itself everything explained by my source made perfect sense. My source broke down every single image down and thoroughly explained what the “experts” believed it meant.
My source on Picasso’s 1937 mural,Guernica, tells me that he made it to show the terrible events of the spanish Civil War. My source is reliable, and i trust it because it stated many fact that have been mentioned in other articles as well as this below.

My source tells me that, the people in the painting are suffering from an aerial bombing. The majority that was killed were women and children, which is very sad….. I trust this source because, its was well explained in a web site speaking of war disasters.
I forgot to put up the link to the website i got it from……..

My source say that this painting was based on the massacre at Guernica (a small village in northern spain) where hundred of people were killed. This massacre created one of the biggest civil protested that paris has ever had. That’s why picasso call his mural Guernica.

According to my source this painting was created by the aftermath of a series of bomb testings that were decided by Adolph Hitler in 1937, also at the same time Spain was going through their own Revolution due to a coup led by Generalissimo Francisco Franco. These events gave Picasso the muse he needed to depict the city of Guernica as a place of anguish while it was in it current state. I fully trust my source for my previous experience with it other publications.

According to my source, Picasso’s Guernica is a painting that reminds us of the events that happened during the Spanish Civil War in 1937. Guernica was a part of Spain that was chosen by Hitler to be used for bombing practice. Hundreds of innocent people were killed while the town burned for three days. When Picasso was commissioned to create a mural for the World Fair in Paris, he was looking for inspiration. He didn’t want to create a painting about the war because he usually avoided political art. But after he found out what happened at Guernica, Picasso was so shocked and angry that he immediately started sketching for the mural. Today, Guernica is still a very well known painting with all its symbolism and meaning still a mystery. Picasso never gave a definite explanation to the symbols in his painting and said that it should be up to the viewers to decide what it meant to them.
I trust this source because it comes from PBS, the Public Broadcasting Service, which has a good reputation for providing solid and factual information. Here is the link where I read about Guernica: http://www.pbs.org/treasuresoftheworld/a_nav/guernica_nav/main_guerfrm.html

Created in 1937 by Pablo Picasso, Guernica was painted. It depicts the horrific destruction that took place in the city of Guernica, Spain due to German and Italian air strikes on the city. It shows the dramatic sufferings of the many innocent civilians that were impacted by the air bombings on the city.
I used Wikipedia as a reliable source of information for this topic because it allows a community of people to contribute to its content, this includes many specialist and intellectual minds. The information is constantly critiqued for accuracy purposes.
It was created in 1937. The picture is depicting the Nazi German bombing of Guernica, Spain, by twenty-four bombers, on April 26, 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, in which a number of people variously estimated between 250 and 1,600 were killed and many more were injured.
According to my source, The shape and posture of the bodies express protest. Picasso uses black, white, and grey paint to set a somber mood and express pain and chaos.
Flaming buildings and crumbling walls not only express the destruction of Guernica, but reflect the destructive power of civil war. The newspaper print used in the painting reflects how Picasso learned of the massacre. The light bulb in the painting represents the sun.The broken sword near the bottom of the painting symbolizes the defeat of the people at the hand of their tormentors.

This source explains that the artwork by Pablo Picasso based on an incident that happened April 27th, 1937, when the German air force carried out a bombing raid on the Basque village of Guernica in northern Spain. The devastation was intended to terrorize the population and break the spirit of the Basque resistance.
I chose this source because as going through my many years of English classes my teachers and professors told me not to use commercial sites and use sites ending with .org/ .edu or .gov but not wikipedia. I also used this site because it gave a brief description of the topic and provided a similar picture describing the event in a more simple form. I also see the main use for the horse symbolizing fascism and the main destruction from it.

In the 1937, Picasso was commissioned to paint a large mural to show the tragedies the done by massacres. Based on source, during the Spanish Civil War, the German planes dropped down a load of incendiary bombs over the town. The town burned 3 day. Six hundred civilians died. This was the most distressing painting i had seen. In this artwork, Picasso used many subtle ways to described the pains, horrors, and misfortunes.
The reason why i trust the source that i found from Wikipedia was I believe it is more reliable than others. And it explained the artwork impartial and detailedly.
